Shanghai & Beijing Trip 2010

I've officially went through 1 entire week at my new job but I'm still feeling jittery going to work. I'm very careful at whatever I do as I always fear of doing something wrong or not good enough. I don't remember having that feeling when i started at my previous job. Maybe coz I set myself a higher expectation now. I hope I can get the hang of things quickly and work independently soon.

Not a very relaxing Dec but I'm determine to work hard! So no holiday plans for me now till I pass my probation. To be fair, I had my share of holidays this year so no complaints. The last holiday of 2010 is my Shanghai and Beijing trip. A trip filled with food and more food, walking and more walking!

Some highlights of the trip:

1. 海底捞火锅店
I think it is a must go steamboat place. Even though the queue was crazy, they provided free flow of snacks, fruits and drinks while we waited. What was even better was they provided manicure, hand mask, shoe polishing, specs and hp cleaning services for the customers all for FREE!

Free flow of pop corns. You can even ask to pack some back home! hah

One side is the "Ma La" soup base which was too choking for everyone.

The free services

Ain't my mani cute?!? :)

We ended our first day with a stroll along Shanghai Tan.

2. I love "Dong Po Rou". It's the 3 layer fatty meat haha Despite the fats which i try not to eat, I love eating the skin. All the collagen yum~

3. Xiao Long Pau.
Even though both shops were called Nanxiang. The taste and price was completely different. The posh Nanxiang at Yuyuan had the same prices as the ones in Singapore. The xiao long paus had more meat and so little soup in it. It was a tad disappointing.

On the other hand, this Nanxiang that my bro brought us to along a small street, had the most delectable xiao long paus :) Every little one was made on the spot with just the right amount of filling and loads of soup to slurp up!

4. Somewhere a little out of the busy Shanghai City will be this little water town called Xitang. Nothing much at that around but it's a good place to just stroll and relax for a half a day trip.

Along one of the many alleys

They are famous for their water tofu. Just like the name suggest, it was filled with water and you can choose to either have it salty, with soya sauce in it.

or sweet. Just with sugar mixed into the water.

5. For the artsy side of Shanghai, I will suggest you to make a trip Tian Zi Fang. A place filled with many pretty little cafes, you will be spoilt for choice on which to enter.

We settled for BBQ at this cosy little restaurant.

6. Beijing's highlight will definitely be the Great Wall of China. We chose the 3 hr hike route where we checked in at Jin Shan Ling and finished at Si Ma Tai.

The view along the way was pretty amazing but I must say the hike was tiring. All the climbing made us perspire like mad that we ended up taking off clothes piece by piece.

Finally we reached the end.

7. Food Street with exotic food heh

8. Tian An Men and the Forbidden Palace. A super duper crowded place!

Inside the Palace

On a side note, check out this cool mandarin duck we saw at Beihai Park (A park near the forbidden palace). Don't you think it looks super fake?!?! just like those wooden ones we see in a shop!

9. Peking Duck at DaDong. One of the most pricey restaurant we been to in China but the ambiance was good. I like the peking duck too :)

The chef cutting up the duck for us.

Some of our dishes:
Duck liver

I dont know wat is this haha. Some sweet n sour plum paste

10. Visited the White Cloud Temple and I thought it was worth the trip. According to the legend, we were to look for 3 monkeys in the temple and touch it. This will bring us luck for the days ahead! We managed to find all 3 thanks to my dad heh.

1st Monkey

2nd Monkey

And there is the 3rd monkey at the back but we were too busy taking pics of the other zodiac signs hah

The other legend was to throw coins to hit the bell in the middle of this huge coin. It is to bring good luck too. My dad and I managed to hit it!! yeah!!

I summed up my Beijing Trip with a huge sweet potato that I bought along the streets hahaha Even though I think we got cheated as the guy seemed to pause when we asked the price, this only cost SGD 1.

The Orange Timber

Today was a pretty chill day, walking around, eating and reading my book! It has been a long time since I walked along Blk 85 market. I think the last time was during my sec sch days, on my way back to my grandma house after sch. Since I had breakfast there with my grandma today, I showed der the old sch cake shop where Cham and I bought a huge cream cake (not those fanciful ones we get these days) and finished it all by ourselves under the void deck! Der and I couldn't resist the temptation to buy a slice each :) Strawberry vs blueberry...Only $1.10 each. Those miniture ones that are sold at toast box cost $1.20 and they are only 1/3 the size of this! What a rip off for something nostalgia... Later in the evening, we decided to chill at The Orange Timber @ Tiong Bahru The Orange Timber is a cafe cum art gallery. The plates are bowl used were also meant to be something nostalgia once again... hah However, I use those cutlery at home too. There are like 3 sections to this small cafe...

JetSaver Light Challenge - Penang Trip

A very big Thank You to Jetstar and JetSaver Light! We had an AWESOME trip. Not only was it a cultural and stomach full filling trip filled with nothing but one of the very best food :), we also experienced the affable nature of the people in Penang and most importantly, we made many friends to keep :) Below was the itinerary that got us selected. And we're proud to say that we completed everything mentioned and accomplished even more. Wednesday, 1st July  marks JetSaver Light inaugural flight to Penang and also our, team 4's (GO! Go! team 4!!), inaugural trip to Penang on Jetstar with a budget of SGD60. After the initial briefing and collecting of our SGD60 which we converted to  RM144 , we were all ready and excited to jet off. Checking out the duty free at terminal 1 before boarding . Upon our arrival at Penang, we were warmly welcomed by a group of local performers . A surprising start to the trip. A photo taken together with 2 of the performers outside Penang International...
