Cambodia - Phnom Penh

Whenever I mentioned that I went to Cambodia, everyone will ask "Oh Angkor Wat?".
Nope... I did not go to Angkor Wat. Instead I spent 4 days in Phnom Penh. Initially I thought 4 days was too long but in fact, it was just nice. Of course more could have been done in those 4 days but I was too lazy hah. And the weather was so HOT! As a person with bad skin, sun is definitely not good for me.

This trip was a very educational trip for me. Before I even thought of going to Cambodia, I had no clue of the Killings, Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot etc. A very brief summary - A communist society was built and as a result, thousands of people were tortured and killed brutally. The most shocking thing to me was that this ended only in 1979, just a couple of years before I was born.  I was quite taken a back that this happened so near my era and I am totally ignorant about it.

We first visited the prison where people are captivated and tortured till they are ready to be executed.
Below is me reading the rules at the prison. I have a very scared/disgusted look. I refused to let Der take a pic of the rules as I thought they were inhumane.
Der took a pic of the bed people were tortured in.
After the above, they will be moved to the killing fields where they get executed! Another scary tour for me. We were given an audio to listen to as we walk around the place. It was sad to hear the stories and to think that the place I am walking used to be a place where thousands of people were killed.
The skulls and bones are now all stacked up.
Of course not all is sad and scary from this trip. We had our share of fun too. Yeah!
Being a tourist from Singapore, we had our share of nice restaurants and cool stuff to do too. Our hotel - The 240 has an eco friendly concept. Even the restaurant is an organic restaurant. Look at the grass patch in the middle of the table. Pretty cool huh?
Drinks were served in the below cups.
Just a few shops down from our hotel, there was an eco friendly free bike rental service. The bikes were made out of bamboos. We thought it was a good form of transport and even the Cambodians thought our bikes were interesting as they keep touching my bike whenever I stopped to rest hah.
However, please note... riding a bike is not for the faint hearted. The traffic is crazy!
Along the river at night when all the lights are lighted up.
People were buying birds to set them free. "More birds more luck!" But we didn't dare to touch them.
We had brekkie at a bakery on the last day and my food was interesting. Instead of rosti with smoked salmon, the rosti looked alike was made out of sweet potatoes. And I finally look better hahah.. my eyes were so puffy and small through out the trip, I think this is the only pic you can really see my eyes hah

The Orange Timber

Today was a pretty chill day, walking around, eating and reading my book! It has been a long time since I walked along Blk 85 market. I think the last time was during my sec sch days, on my way back to my grandma house after sch. Since I had breakfast there with my grandma today, I showed der the old sch cake shop where Cham and I bought a huge cream cake (not those fanciful ones we get these days) and finished it all by ourselves under the void deck! Der and I couldn't resist the temptation to buy a slice each :) Strawberry vs blueberry...Only $1.10 each. Those miniture ones that are sold at toast box cost $1.20 and they are only 1/3 the size of this! What a rip off for something nostalgia... Later in the evening, we decided to chill at The Orange Timber @ Tiong Bahru The Orange Timber is a cafe cum art gallery. The plates are bowl used were also meant to be something nostalgia once again... hah However, I use those cutlery at home too. There are like 3 sections to this small cafe...

A very big Thank You to Jetstar and JetSaver Light! We had an AWESOME trip. Not only was it a cultural and stomach full filling trip filled with nothing but one of the very best food :), we also experienced the affable nature of the people in Penang and most importantly, we made many friends to keep :) Below was the itinerary that got us selected. And we're proud to say that we completed everything mentioned and accomplished even more. Wednesday, 1st July  marks JetSaver Light inaugural flight to Penang and also our, team 4's (GO!
